Increased train lengths on the ADK&LC

December 11th, 2018

WHITEHALL N.Y.- The Adirondack & Lake Champlain Railroad Co.(ADK&LC), has been testing train capacities, to solve line congestion issues on the Lake Champlain Sub. Harrison, operations supervisor and manager and Rocky, locomotive and rolling stock manager are figuring out how long trains can safely be. “We have determined that Distributed Power units(DPU’s) are the best way to go. Class 1’s do it, so why shouldn’t we?” said Harrison in an interview. A problem is that most of the ADK&LC’s locos are second-hand, and many lack remote capabilities. “We can have about 50 cars with three units on the front, but any more cars require DPU’s.”

Four units got a 50 car train moving, but we are still a long way from 100 cars. If this works on the Lake Champlain Sub, than it might work on the Green Mountain, Rutland, and Saratoga Subs and well.
